[Sussex] <slash>net and shutdown...

Can anyone help me with a problem I have with my mandrake 9 box?

When it boots up, it takes quite a long while to initialise eth0.  When
it shuts down however,  it completely hangs (or sits forever) at a point
when it says '/net is still in use' (or words to this effect!)

This happens however I have configured eth0 (static IP/ DHCP etc.).

Why would it hang? and what exactly is /net?
