I guess you mean eth0:1 eth0:2 etc. I've run one interface with five different network numbers (two "real" IPs, 192.168.9.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x) so it can't be restricted on the basis of network. I suspect that it will depend on the number supported as default at compile time - time to look at the code!
