You might have the same problem I did.  I turned on the devpts file-system.
You get no device entries in /dev/pts (I assume that your using devfs).  I 
tracked this down by "strace xterm" from a console.  The solution (as I said
on the page) is to mount devpts.  But you have probably worked that out by 
now.
