Hi list,
At the end of last week I posted a question about html and stuff, in the hope
that someone could come up with an alternative solution to being stuck with
having to use F******** from those glorious "cash meisters" at M$. Though I
should remind you all that this was due to my ignorance in matters HTML and
it's "ilk".
You responded magnificently, and I can't thank you enough.
I will admit, that my initial thoughts (with quite a lot of the suggestions
were "and how the f*** do they expect me to do that"). But as I was following
links and generally looking into following your advice, I have managed to
suss out a few things to be able to understand your advice more fully.
Paul Turners suggestion to try O'Reilly's book's, have yet to bare fruit
(work, money, time and some of the "reviews" at amazon have left me undecided
which book(s) I will eventually end up with - though that's just a matter of
time)
John Crowhurst's suggestion of trying "sausage" software have been the biggest
eye opener. After downloading "sausage" and installing it (then discovering
it's a time limited trial version), mean that when I noticed that it's not a
WYSIWYG type application, enabled me to go back into my mandrake install and
re-examine BLUEFISH.
And like the proverbial "bolt of lightening", it dawned on me. What with
Geoff's suggestions for text editors (not sure if I'm quite ready for that
yet) and tags - mean that I now follow what was said about headers,
paragraphs and so on.
One of the other things that was preying on my mind was the lack of scanning
facility under mandrake. Over the weekend I have managed (finally) to get it
working (though for some strange reason, sane insists in identifying it as an
epson GT7000 instead of the epson perfection 1260 photo, that it actually is
- though this maybe to do with the fact that the instructions that I followed
where "monkey see, monkey do" and I haven't yet managed to use the most up to
date sane/xsane/driver etc -not sure).
Anyway, this has all culminated in me starting to build my website with
Bluefish and the gimp - I doubt whether it will be much more than a basic
text/picture thing to start with (but I've got to start somewhere) - I'm
still trying to get my head around the image/resolution/file size thing - as
I see no point in producing something that looks quite flashy, but takes a
virtual millennium to load. Hopefully an atom in a very small nail in a tiny
batten in the coffin of microsoft!!! lol
Oh and while I think about it, I noticed from the w3c mark up site something
about the latest version of HTML being released soon - what does this really
mean - It said something about supporting additional features etc, but I
didn't quite follow what they actually meant by that?
Anyhow, when i've got it finished, I'll post the URL and you can all have a
look and tell me what an unoriginal pile of crap I have produced!
Again, many thanks for the outstanding advice. All your suggestions are very
much appreciated - and I will post more idiot questions IDC.
regards
John D :-)
