I just had to hand remove everything that depended on python2.1 using dpkg --purge 

... note.. this is not a pleasant job, it involves removing everything in KDE and Koffice which debian-security had dumped on me one by one in order of dependancy

*blurgh*

.. now if I can just convince debian that _it_ does not need to manage my kernel installation!
