Well, you could say I'm a bit biased :) but I'd recommend Slackware.
Mainly because it's a bit more lightweight overall than other distros.
You can't really go too large with the one CD (assuming you're not wanting
KDE/Gnome which is on the second CD).

I'd put Gentoo out of the picture for older machines because it'd end up
taking so long to get going (unless you decide to use the precompiled
installation maybe...)

Whatever you do, try a lighter window manager if you want one at all. Try
Xfce.
