Forgive me but couldn't you just use nohup?

Thus:

$nohup emerge [params] 
$exit

Nohup continues even when you disconnect.

Output of your command will appear in nohup.log in the directory you ran
the command.  Alternatively you can just look at /var/log/emerge.log to
see what has happened.
