Geoff,

Thanks for that! I now have a bit of understanding as to how the kernel 
works with other things.

 I went back to the RH8 disks and started my search from a different 
angle.  Before I was looking for a file called 'kernel-headers' (ok, now 
I know how daft I was being).  After engaging my brain I found a file 
called 'glibc-headers', installed it and my mission can now continue. I 
must apologise for my easy defeat in some matters and my haste in 
seeking help.
