[Sussex] Online at last!

Hello sussex,

  "Ok, houston we have a go, yup mission gentoo is a go."

  <big cheshire grin>

  I now have a modem connection in gentoo.  The problem was pppd
  configuration files and /etc/resolv.conf not
  being set up correctly to use PAP-authentication
  
  Im extremely pleased with myself, as I did most of this on me
  lonesome - thanx everyone tho for your input and moral support.

     (cor! I can go and sleep now!)
     
  I use a script to connect rather than wvdial (which I wasnt able to
  get up and running).  Then killall pppd to disconnect.

  I call the script 'go' which I copied into /usr/sbin made it
  executable with chmod.

  I log in under user and then su

  is this correct, or must I be ROOT to emerge?  If so, how can
  I ensure security whilst emerging/downloading stuff?
