Yup.. in /etc/rc.conf change the line:

DISPLAYMANAGER=xdm

to..

DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm

.. that'll do the trick.

On the other front, you can always switch to a console:

Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or any F key through to F6, each is a separate console)

...and then log in as root and type `halt`.
