[Sussex] Help with linux

Hello

my name is azhar khan and have recently started with linux but am having 
problems concerning connecting to the internet , i have a book here by 
marcel gagneabout moving to linux and he makes the move to linuxsound so 
easy but i am having problems regarding getting the right info from aol i.e. 
phone number i am dialling to connect the problem is that i am using 
broadband.  Also ip address of the dns (name servers), ip address of my smtp 
and pop3 email hosts and also ip address of a news server.  Please can you 
help i really want to make linux work and please forgive me for my stupidity 
if you can also explain to me the smtp is it simplie mail
transfer protocol that all i know if that is correct.
