I find the Wrox series very informative. You can't miss them in the
bookstore as their covers are in red and yellow. Failing that the
Developer's Library brand are also good. A certain amount of tech speak
in all of them, but at least laid out and explained intelligibly.

Click on the Trash icon in Shortcut or Folder bar, click within the
message list pane, CTRL-A to select all messages, then hit Del or right
click Delete.

Or you could set your filter to delete spam rather than send it to
trash.
