Phil,
Gareth and I both get an e-mail when a new member is subscribed. These
days I routinely send out e-mails to new members greating them and
encouraging them to introduce themselves, though I know I have missed a
few people when I've been away on holidays or business trips.
As for recruitment, I've got at least three people involved in this list,
possibly more, but I also know a number of other Linux users who simply
aren't interested in LUGs at all.
Two comparable examples; during the year 2003 I worked at two different companies:
1. Claybrook.
------------
Based in Crawley, Claybrook employed a fairly large number of
development and technical staff developing pensions administration
systems. Whilst Linux was creeping ts way in through the back door as
a file server there was no focus on it at all and the companies
principle products were all Windows & VB based.
Claybrook to my knowledge had three employess subscribed to this
list. Me, Angelo and Stephen Rye. AFAIK Angelo and Stephen are still
subscribers.
2. Cmed Technology
------------------
Cmed systems are based in an office a few miles north of Horsham.
During 2003 Cmed had a team of 8 full time Linux developers, two trial
configuators, four sys-admin staff and a director all working on
technical projects under Linux and NetBSD directly related to primary
functions of the company. The majority of the remaining, non-technical
staff routinely work on Linux machines as a core part of their work.
During that period only one member of Cmed staff has been subscribed to
the Sussex LUG - me. The other people are simply not interested in the
LUG. All of them use Linux in a highly technical manner, all of them
also run Linux at home (except one who doesn't have a computer at home).
