Dominic,

The best advise I can give is that you need to make sure that you understand Makefiles before you worry to much about autoconf.  Quite a few projects don't need a special configuration stage at all (in this case a Makefile alone is sufficient).

Makefiles are very simple.  I have a good book on them if you'd like to borrow it.
