Geoff is quite right here.  I did this on my Myth-TV box (a PVR)
so that when it booted it would run up the Myth TV front end and
display it on my TV - I didn't want to bother login in using a
remote control.

The file you need to edit is /etc/gdm/dgm.config and set
   AutomaticLoginEnable=true
   AutomaticLogin=your-user
