Ha, for the moment, I've started the emerge --update --deep world to get  
it over and done with (which should pull in kde 3.3.1 and gnome 2.8  
amongst the 244 packages that need updating - I'd imagine that it'll take  
sometime (again) :-(

p.s. and yes, I think that buying Dave Chapmans old laptop has been a  
godsend (one package down, 243 to go)!
