Look in /dev for /dev/lp0. If you are using devfs, then it could be in
/dev/lp/0.

I'd suggest looking at the Printing-HOWTO:

The Parport website will also be helpful:

You can see if the device talks to the printer by simply catting a large
file to the device.

Perhaps you've not configured the /etc/printcap to show where the printer
is connected.
