Use telnet to send the message, that way noone can complain tht their
mail-client is better coz you haven't used one! :p

on a more serious note, I think this is a great idea, and yes, I do
think we should use a FOSS MUA, maybe something like mail, pine or mutt
as almost every linux system has one of these by default (unless you do
a stage one Gentoo install as I found out the other day!).
