Hi list,
Eon's ago, I think I mentioned about having a go at producing a website.
Various bit's of advice suggested that I learn to code a website by hand
etc etc.
So with that in mind, I've been learning various bit's of stuff about
how to accomplish this, but I seem to have hit a bit of a brick wall!
The main part's of the site (as intended) don't seem to pose a problem,
but it's my intention to have a basic "welcome to" page that has a
heading (which will be the link into the rest of the site) and rather
naive, home produced image/logo (which looks crap, mainly because of my
non-existent artistic skills with the gimp, but conveys the attitude
that I want).
Now, the basics of making the page are done, but the brick wall is how I
position the image. Because of some of the stuff I've been reading up
on, I've opted for strict xhtml and for the initial page a <style>
element as opposed to a linked style sheet (that'll be for the main part
of the site).
I just can't find any straight forward way of putting the image in the
centre of the page. Sure, I could maybe use the "padding-left" facility,
but that doesn't overcome the problem of potential visitor's having
different resolutions set. Obviously, the percentage of view on a
800x600 res setting is going to be different to the percentage of a
1024x768 setting etc etc.
So could anyone suggest how I might accomplish this or suggest any good
links where I might find something about how to do this ?
regards
John C.
p.s. I've looked into stuff at w3schools, and the only thing that seemed
to make sense was using the <center> option, but that was deprecated in
HTML 4.0 and is precluded by the use of strict xhtml 1.0
