Hi John

Its possible that your internal modem is what is known as a "Winmodem".
Winmodems are notorious in that they have minimal hardware and rely on
installed software to "Emulate" the actions of a modem.  Although I think
there may be a solution/s in Linux (Linmodem?). You are absolutely right,
its better to use an external serial modem (athough, with broadband getting
cheaper all the time, why not upgrade?).
