Hi Paul,
'Phishing', I believe, comes from the earlier 'phreaking' whereby free
phonecalls could be made by whistling a 400Hz(?) tone into a public
telephone to disable the mechanism whereby call tariffs are originated.
As to why 'phreaking' I would guess it is an acronym of 'phone breaking'.
