Sorry, I don't think you can do this with Metacity (GNOME's default
WM).  You setup the alt-drag thing via the
System->Preferences->Windows dialog, but I've not seen an option for
resizing.

One way may be to swap metacity for Sawfish, or some other WM that can
be used in GNOME.
