Thank you very much. iwconfig now actually shows a mac address:

wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"swarbrickwireless"
          Mode:Ad-Hoc Frequency:2.462 GHz Cell: 00:12:CF:02:B3:4C
          Bit Rate=11 Mb/s
          Fragment thr:off
Link Quality:96/100 Signal level:-39 dBm Noise level:-252 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Unfortunately, when I try ifup (or through the network-admin gui), it
pauses for ages and then comes out with:

...
Apr 16 21:53:11 localhost kernel: rtl8180: Bringing up iface
Apr 16 21:53:11 localhost kernel: rtl8180: Card successfully reset
Apr 16 21:53:11 localhost kernel: rtl8180: Not associated
Apr 16 21:53:12 localhost kernel: rtl8180: IBSS on ch 11
Apr 16 21:53:12 localhost kernel: rtl8180: Enabling beacon TX
Apr 16 21:53:41 localhost kernel: rtl8180: Bringing up iface
Apr 16 21:53:41 localhost kernel: rtl8180: Card successfully reset
Apr 16 21:53:41 localhost kernel: rtl8180: Not associated
Apr 16 21:53:42 localhost kernel: rtl8180: IBSS on ch 11
Apr 16 21:53:42 localhost kernel: rtl8180: Enabling beacon TX

in /var/log/messages. And fails.

I'm not trying to use WEP. And have done a:
$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 key open

so I don't think that should be a problem.

/etc/network/interfaces looks like:

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
name Wireless LAN card
wireless_essid swarbrickwireless

auto wlan0

Any help or ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Rupert
