I did another Google search on this problem & found a whole thread on an
Ubuntu forum relating to this very problem (don't know why it didn't
appear when I searched before).
Anyway, it seems that there could be a problem with the 2.6.8.1 kernel
that came with Ubuntu 4.10 Warty regarding IDE CD writing.
I'm going to get a CD of Ubuntu 5.04 Hoary & see if that fixes the
problem. In the meantime, it seems that SCSI emulation is the one thing
left to try for now.
