You're right -- it would seem to indicate that some of the '.list'
files in /var/apt/list/* are corrupted - it could be anything.  For now,
I'd change your sources.list file to reflect the mirror locations in the
UK:

deb http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/debian/ testing main
deb-src http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/debian/ testing main
