If you can get decent digital terrestrial reception, get yourself a fifty
quid Hauppauge DVB-T card and install vdr. I had a tivo for a few years
and vdr is almost better now and still developing quickly.
I guess you could use myth too probably if you like that. The important
thing is that the tv card gives you the raw mpeg ts streams that are in
the signal, so you lose no quality by recording, it's very low on resource
usage because there's no encoding to be done and it only uses about 1.5gb
an hour, so another hundred quid on a 300gb drive and you can record truly
unhealthy amounts of tv easily and cheaply ;)
