After a cold or a warm boot I found that I had lost colour just doing:

  # ivtvctl -u -xff
  # ivtvctl -p 6

It wasn't that there wan't any colour, but it was colour challenged.
However cycling thought "ivtvctl -p 7" and back to "ivtvctl -p 6" 
fixed it while the dd was running.
