As the dodgy Greek bloke shouted when he alledgedly ran down the street
starkers, "Eureka"! Dunno why, but I was convinced (well, after a
fashion), that I was missing something basic, and that basic thing
turned out to be finding out what I had to put in to a terminal to at
least change my java path so that the bloody Openlaszlo and the Tomcat
server would start.
The answer was to do $ which java which told me that I just needed to
use PATH=$PATH:/usr/bin/java .
Ha! and even though I haven't got too far looking through it yet, it
looks like Openlaszlo is going to be even more over my head than bloody
java !
Oh well, never mind eh! All part of the (not always so) rich pattern of
life.
Thankyou very much all those who offered assistance on my current quest.

p.s. And yes, with any luck I will make the moot. God, whats happening
to the world? That'd be 2 consecutive months!
