For what it's worth, two of my friends have recently moved to linux,
both competent with computers but never used unix before.
One chose mepis and it runs like a dog, with quite a few things "broken"
by him trying to customise, where the debian nature of the system is
heavily disguised.
The other chose ubuntu, which is just as customisable, but makes it
obvious how to install packages, change settings etc. (i.e. USE DEBIAN!
:-). His computer is running perfectly happily. He's amazed all his
family by trying out stellarium in front of them and the world is a
wonderful place...
Seriously, a debian-based system is by far the best for a newcomer and I
hugely recommend gnome as well, as everything Just Works in ubuntu _but_
you can change bits if you want without destroying everything else.
Rupert
P.S. Who can guess which distro I run nowadays?!
