[Sussex] SuSE 9.3 - curious behaviour

I think I'm getting confused about what the hell I'm doing here!
I think I've installed Opera 8.01, Firefox and Thunderbird.
Opera, when the icon is clicked, seems to be starting. Then it just
stops. WTF?????
Firefox, after following the instructions in the release notes, seems to
have installed, but I can't work out how to start it - I don't seem to
be able to "link to application" for a desktop start icon.
Thunderbird also seems to be there i.e. I managed to get it to
install/start and get my e-mail account set up, but don't seem to be
able to "link to application" either. Hence I've kept it minimised so
I've got the use, but suspect that when I send this and try to close,
it'll also disappear off into my system somewhere.
I might just have to use "chown" as Colin mentioned earlier today - but
don't know how to use that command. Though I'm also unsure as to whether
I need to change ownership of the app/facility, or add my user account,
or add a group, or add my user account to a/the group.
Perhaps somebody could clarify this so I've got some idea as to what I'm
looking for, so I might be able to find out what I need to do.
regards
John D.
