Nope - not just for network printing - however, you mention wanting to
be able to access files on your main system from your Windows laptop -
and you will need Samba for that.
Configuring Samba is a bit of a black art - however, for something
really simple like you want, it isn't difficult at all - O'Rielly do a
very good book on configuring Samba. They also have put it online as
well - check here:
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch02_04.html for a
very very simple config file that should give you what you want (i.e.
access to a directory)
And really, that is it for what you want - the share will appear as
\\machine-name\test in windows world.
Samba is a very complex package - but for real simple stuff, its easy.
