I prefer reproducible effects that using the same binary packages not
conditionally compiled by USE flags gives me in terms of adminning but I
can see the appeal to general users of a distro that lets you pick and
choose (and even have some stuff using say alsa and some stuff not etc.)

I've even started using (home-built) .debs for my kernels now.  It's
nice when you know the hardware is the same or mostly the same and you
can just rollout one packages across many servers.
