C isn't really any harder than anything else, it's just getting you're
head around the concepts you have to deal with.
You'll find that as you descend from high level languages to lower level
ones that the easy stuff gets harder and the hard stuff gets easier.
That's the point I was making about python the other day - it's great
when you just need to knock out something small or quick - but when you
start to investigate it in terms of long running, complex processes you
find that things that are there to make your life easier end up making
it harder.

I think there is a certain conceptual grounding you need before you can
just work from reference books.

It's also knowing what bits are important - that can only come with
time and experience.
