I now have a working mouse which survives between reboots and no doubt 
in the fullness of time I will get the touchpad going as well although I 
hardly ever use it intentionally.

Thanks to Steve and Thomas for your suggestions.  These were much more 
use than the man and Debian install pages which are rather out of date.
