I thought you had installed mplayer.  As I know you're using Debian:

  1). Become root
	su -
	<root-password>

  2). Add the following to /etc/apt/sources.list
	deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sarge main

  3). Do:
	apt-get update

  4). Do:
	apt-get install w32codecs mplayer-`arch` mplayer-doc

MPlayer is licensed under the GPL - but some of the codecs that are needed,
or the formats they implement, are covered by non-free licenses.
