Could you simply put a RADIUS server in your distro running as a slave to
your master RADIUS server. If your RADIUS server becomes unreachable from
the wireless box, it will carry on authenticating users.

I suspect that using cramfs has its benefits in reducing space used by the
image, but sacrificing the ease of updating. With MeshAP, its very
difficult updating components so I guess you download a new image and
overwrite everything.
