[Sussex] debian control panel

I am determined!
I have discovered the synaptic panel for updating the software and have
put the various 2.6 parts in.
Then I have downloaded the driver from nvidia and installed this using
the recovery mode. It seemed happy and created the required kernel part.
Now when I start up normally the system is excessively slow so I guess
that I have installed something that should not be.
I need a little help.
I need precisely to know what I must select for the new kernel and what
is required so that the source is there for nvidia to be able to install.
Then I need some help to know exactly which lines I should add to the
X11 conf file to get the display running correctly.
I admit I am spoilt by the sheer ease which I am used to with Mandriva.
Obviously as the system is now so slow (even the mouse takes 2 seconds
to respond) I cannot do anything I will now do yet another clean install.
First I am taking out some packages using synaptic, fortunately the
system does run using 2.4.27. Then I shall try installing the nvidia
package again (in recovery mode).
