[Sussex] Thunderbird Problem

Dear Experts,
I have run into a problem with Thunderbird.
I was cleaning it up and now when I start it it takes all the CPU and I 
don't know how long it is carrying on for like this.
I have scanned belatedly using clam av and found a number of viruses, 
but I can't see that this could have any effect.
Can anybody suggest what I can do to unlock this problem.
