Hi,
Thought I'd forward this on to Dorset, Surrey, Sussex and Berkshire as
you're our neighbours.
The next Hants LUG meet is Southampton *this* Saturday. Details below.
Apologies if this is deemed rude for me to cross post. Let me know if
so, and I won't do it again.
Cheers,
Al.

All,
Next Saturday is a LUG meeting at Southampton Uni! All the details are
on the wiki[0]. We still need Greeters[1] - there are 3 slots left! It
would be nice to see some new faces helping out with this - it's an easy
and hassle free way to contribute back to the LUG. If you have a
specific problem to sign up on the I Need Help [2] page. Please remember
to e-mail Hugo (hugo at carfax.org.uk) your wireless MAC address before
1630 on Friday 31st April if you want to use the wireless network.
*N.B:* As per our February meeting, you will not be able to use the
normal entrance to Zepler building, but will have to go round the back
to the door opposite the main entrance. We hope to have posters with
arrow signs up, but basically you need to come in where the green arrow
is on the map[3] (the top arrow for those with R/G colour blindness).
The red (bottom) arrow indicates the normal entrance.
As always the suggested donation for the meeting is £2 (£1 conc). You
can also donate online via the Nochex system[4]. Remember to ask if you
need a lift or help getting there. Bring food! See you there!
Short Talks
-----------
Please tell anyone you know who might be interested in these talks:
* 11:30am: "Meet the MySQL Database" - Imran Chaudhry
* 12:30pm: Interactive Web Apps with AJAX - Nick Whitelegg
* 1:30pm: Wikis - What they are and how to use them - Alan Pope
* 2:30pm: DAD: Desktop Adapted for Dad - Adam Trickett
Imran kicks off the talks with an introduction to the MySQL database,
how to configure and use it. MySQL is a very popular database and forms
part of the "LAMP" platform. Imran runs the local MySQL users group.
Nick will be talking about web applications that use AJAX, a fully
buzzword-compliant term for dynamic alteration of a webpage. AJAX is
used on sites like Google Maps, but is a relatively simple concept and
easy to make inroads with.
If you've ever had trouble getting your head around the concept of
wikis, or worried about editing a wiki and getting it wrong, Alan's talk
is for you. Alan will be using our own HantsLUG wiki to demonstrate the
power of a collaborative website, but will also be looking at other
popular wikis. Finally, Adam will be telling us about how he set up his
Desktop Adapted for Dad, a Linux computer for an older technophobe. Many
of you will remember Adam's postings as he developed this project,
followed by successful online articles.
Tony
