This sounds a little like a problem I have with Thunderbird on my Debian
Etch system which I think is a bug.
I have Thunderbird and gnupg set up to display the image attached to a
public key, if one exists, when it displays a signed Email. The display
thread blocks Thunderbird until I close the image window. If I try to do
anything to the Email before closing the image, especially move it to
another folder, than things lock up. I think this is because I take the
focus away from the image and something stops it getting it back as I can't
then close the image to unlock things.
However, I have discovered that if I kill the image display task things
start working again. Of course since the display is locked I have to do that
by using SSH from another computer!
