Hi,

Your partner probably already picked this up but when using ubuntu
with my own mp3 stick (a trusty old ibead600) I noticed a 'trash'
directory is created on the player and deleted files are moved there
by default.

Also I've found the irc channel for ubuntu-uk (
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/IRC )very helpful & you might find your
answer there:

Good Luck
