[Sussex] Booting from a USB device

There appear to be a number of advantages in being able to boot Linux 
(in my case Fedora) from a USB device.
Memory sticks are possibly a bit small (as I would like to install a 
complete database application) but I have a 250GB USB disk which would 
be large enough! Has anyone any experience or advice on using this 
approach and links to any useful web sites. Thanks, Brendan
