[Sussex] Sound capture advice wanted

I've been trying to find an explanation of the routing underlying
Ubuntu's VolumeControl (based on alsamixer).  For example what are
'Capture' and 'PCM', and what does it mean to 'Toggle audio capture from
Capture'?

I also need advice on what works well in practice for a basic PC.  Stuff
like (1) sound cards expect mono electret microphones, and (2) sound
recording needs capture enabled to work _and_ capture muted otherwise
the recording 'breaks up' (Ubuntu 7.10).  It's taken a while to find out
this much :-/
