I have Linux Format.
While, with broadband, there is little use for the DVD, some of the 
articles do make good reading.
I do suggest that you do read through the odd copy as there is a 
surprising amount of useful information.
As for the books, I am recommending Linux for Dummies, 2007 edition 
which is written around fedora and there are several books on Ubuntu.
As you go on you will find that airing problems through this list is 
very helpful to yourself and to others.
