not rigid, single vendor, single approach tactics, but rather standards.
For command line apps interaction with the operating system with have a
defined standard that LINUX and most over UNIX type OS's comply to -
POSIX - isn't time someone made a POSIX-GUI extension? (and please can
it be OO!)

On your final point however, I'm afraid I have to disagree slightly.
Some problems (especially where DVD is concerned) cannot be solved
without significant change in the US (and in some cases EU, or UK) legal
system and it's approach to software. It is precisely because these
factors do not interest people that those of us who are interested need
to be active and make people aware.

Most people aren't interested in politics - but they'd soon perk up
their ears if they heard Tony Blair had accepted a bung for a couple of
million quid in exchange for privatising the police force (Note, I'm not
suggesting this is likely to happen). I feel it is the duty of anyone
who is in the know to at least make people aware of the decision they
are making - most people simply assume they have no choice.
