I said the obvious but in the case of there being no CD in the drive the
drawer should just open at the press of the button.
Where this is not happening it does point to a faulty drive.
To check it remove the data lead, IDE or SATA, and disconnect power
supply and then reconnect power supply but don't plug data lead in.
Now if the tray does not open (with or without disk) then the drive is
faulty.
Fortunately, these days the drives are pretty cheap. You can get a
standard drive with lightscribe for less than £20 and the laptop drive
is some £40 or £50.
