I am unhappy to report that it appears that Dennis Ritchie has died. A
man to which we own a great deal. For those of you who do not recognise
the name (if there are any on this list that don't) he is one of the
founding fathers of Unix, and one of the people that developed the C
programming language.

I was lucky enough to see the man myself once. We were both at the same
Usenix conference, and he was sitting just six rows behind me. The talk
was on early days and the speaker, Peter Salus, opened the floor to
those that had stories to tell form those times. Dennis was one of the
people that got up to speak.

He said he could remember the day he got the first 300 baud (yes three
hundred, not a typo) modem for the project he was working on. He could
see no reason that we would ever need to go faster, as one could read
the e-mails as they came in on the teletype. In those days *every*
e-mail was echoed to console as it came in, and the console was a
teletype - VDUs were just too expensive.

Good-by Dennis and thank you.

Steve
