Portsmouth LUG January BaB meeting will be tomorrow, Saturday, 17th January
2015, from 13:00 to 18:00.
http://www.broadoaksocialclub.net/where.html

You are all cordially invited.

We shall have our usual bring a box meeting. Bring a 'box', bring a notebook,
bring anything that might run Linux, or just bring yourself and enjoy
socialising/learning/teaching or simply chilling out! Bring any Linux or
Open Source problems, come to have help installing Linux or simply to pick up
installation media.

We also have a speaker for this meeting, Mike Ray.

Mike has been visually impaired all his life, but is now totally blind. He
continues to use and program computers. He will show us how he writes code,
how he "reads" things, what he needs to use a computer fully. He will be
showing us his equipment, including a braille monitor/keyboard.

Mike's passion is the Raspberry Pi and all her relatives - Banana Pi, Arduino.
If it is tiny and programmable, then Mike finds it irresistible.

He has a website called Raspberry VI (VI for visually impaired)
www.raspberryvi.org/
which is going from strength to strength.

The Raspberry Pi as originally constituted had inadequate audio for someone
blind, who relied totally on sound to communicate. Many would have given up.
Mike wrote his own code to remedy the problem and can now use his Raspberry
Pi. He will be telling us about this.

For newcomers:
There is plenty of room and some power points, which can be extended by the
extension leads some of us sometimes remember to bring. (Hint, hint!)
Switches would also be useful. There is Wi-Fi, but it is, shall we say,
problematic (and slow). There is also ethernet, but again not very fast (2
Meg) and the room has, if they have not been pinched, homeplugs.

There is plenty of parking just opposite the club, and Hilsea railway
station is immediately adjacent. If coming by car, please note that Norway
Road is at a higher level than Airport Service Road, and flies over it.

The door to the club will probably be locked. If so, you will need to
ring the buzzer and ask for the Linux meeting. Go up the stairs and
through the bar to the door at the back left corner of the bar.

I shall try to be there by 12:30. If I am the only one left at any time after
5:00, I shall go. So if you want to arrive ultra late, make sure that you
let me know!

A gold moneybox will be at the back of the room. **Voluntary** contributions
welcome. Recommended amount: £3:00: which, being interpreted, means in the
range £0.00 to £<infinity>. We do have sundry expenses from time to time,
which this fund covers. We also now have to pay a small charge for the room,
which was previously free.

A sign-in list will also be at the back of the room. Please be sure to sign
it.

See you there!

Lisi
