[SWLUG] audio file format query

i have some wav files created by my digital camera, they play fine in winxp 
and according to media player they are:
32kbps
4 bit sample
mono
8khz sample rate
ima adpcm format

i can't get these to play using noatun,xmms or alsaplayer but i can use 
'play' from the command line is there some obvious explanation for this, what 
should i convert them to with sox to play in the above apps if they are 
already wavs?
