[SWLUG] error message

when i try to use my scsi cdrom i get messages like this on the console:
ext3-fs error (device sd(8,1))
if it had said scd1 it would have made sense but sd(8,1)? and ext3?
how do i interperet this message, what device is  sd(8,1)
i have a scsi disk sda with /usr at sda1 and swap at sda5 and  6 but no '8'
